".....Becoming a parent changes you in so many positive ways"
One of the most extraordinary things about being a mom is the marvelous bond that is created when you hold, caress, and breastfeed your child. From the first attempt, right through to those endless middle of the night feedings, these moments are to be cherished.
For the straight stuff on the miraculous process of feeding your baby oh, so naturally and abundantly, read on.
YOUR BREAST MILK SOOTHES YOUR BABE TO SLEEP AT NIGHT
This a cool fact that serves a useful purpose, too. Nursing your precious baby to sleep at bedtime helps lead them to slumberland in complete confidence of your love, and keeps them there longer than an infant who is simply put to bed. Not only does breastfeeding provide a sense of closeness and safety, but evening breast milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid that induces sleep. This vital component is only part of the package. Hormones and other sleep-promoting substances have a say in the baby-rearing department.
YOUR BREAST MILK CONTAINS 200 OLIGOSACCHARIDES
Oligosaccharides are complex sugars that have an incredible effect on your breast milk. They serve to encourage good bacteria in your baby’s gut while at the same time, block bacteria that shouldn’t be there. The result is a major boost to your wee one’s developing digestive system. Your breasts are up for the challenge of providing just what babt needs. Now, that’s a cool fact that makes the decision to breastfeed even easier.
BREAST MILK PREVENTS CONSTIPATION
The exact formulation of your breast milk is a boon to keeping your baby regular. Pooing and peeing, just as the body is designed to do, comes naturally to a breastfed infant. Because the milk you create is so perfect for your individual child, constipation is almost unheard of. Although with breastfeeding your baby’s stools are typically soft, constipation can happen on the rare occasion. If it does, consult your doctor or midwife for advice.
YOUR BREAST MILK MAY PREVENT SIDS
Studies show that babies who are breastfed for at least two months have a reduced risk of dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The fact that brain development is enhanced plays a part, as does the increase in immunity. And the longer you breastfeed, the lower the chance of your child having SIDS is. Many researchers will encourage moms to breastfeed for at least two years - and at the minimum, six months.
YOUR BREASTS CAN PRODUCE A LOT OF MILK
Moms of multiples need not fear that they cannot produce enough milk to feed their babies. There may be some pumping involved, and dad may have to step in with a bottle or two in the case of triplets or quadruplets. Still, findings have shown that mothers with multiple children can produce an adequate milk supply, to the tune of three liters in a day. Tips for upping your milk production include drinking at least 1800ml of liquids throughout the day.
BREAST MILK CHANGES FLAVORS
You are what you eat in many cases, and your breast milk follows this well-known rule. Cool fact: did you know your baby can smell your breast milk moments after they are born? Breastfed children are thought to develop more diverse palates than those that were fed formula. Your child reaps the benefits because a wide variety of flavors are exposed to your tiny treasure through breastfeeding. All the more reason to eat healthy during lactation. You are influencing your baby’s taste buds in a big way.
It makes sense to breastfeed
The bottom line is short and sweet. Breastfeeding is good for you and even better for baby. This gift to your child benefits both of you by promoting a sense of calmness, and not only that, but it also creates a unique bond that only mom and babe share.
The point that breastfeeding is convenient is minor - there is so much more to it than that. Your wee one’s immune system is strengthened, their hunger is sated at every feeding, and there is a sense of security and love that comes from suckling the breast. Enjoy every blessed moment, and revel in the special connection you have with your child.
